CO2 corrosion in oilfield tubular goods is a widely documented and discussed problem as evidenced by the many papers published by NACE and other technical organizations. The majority of these reports, however, deal with localized pitting or more generalized acid attack resulting from carbon dioxide corrosion. Much less has been written about "mesa-type corrosion" - so named because of the uncorroded plateaus of cathodic areas adjacent to deeply corroded anodic areas creating the appearance of a flat plain and mesa plateau. This paper discusses mesa-type corrosion, its occurrence in oil production facilities in Peru, investigations into causes and control, and implementation/evaluation of remedial actions.
