A series of amorphous Ni-Zr-Al alloys were prepared by the melt spinning process. The corrosion characteristics of these alloys were measured using DC polarization techniques and gravimetric methods. The test environments were aerated HCl acid solutions. The measured corrosion currents were lower for the (Ni36Zr64)xAl(1-x) alloys than for the (Ni50Zr50)xAl(1-x) alloys. The open circuit potentials were 200 mV more positive for the (Ni36Zr64)xAl(1-x) alloys than for the (Ni50Zr50)xAl(1-x) alloys. Al additions up to about 5 At % appear to improve the corrosion resistance of both alloys. The corrosion rate for the (Ni36Zr64)90Al10 alloy was measured as a function of temperature and the activation energy for the process was determined.
