The paper describes an expert system designed to monitor and control on-line and real-time the quality of cooling water. Signals from a lot of sensors located along the cooling water circuit will constitute the input to this data driven expert system. These data are examined by the expert system in order to detect anomalies in the critical aspects of a cooling water unit: dose and stability of corrosion inhibitor, fouling, corrosion rates, microbiological activity, stability-index, turbidity, etc... According to the expertise, advices on control procedures are proposed to the operator or corrective actions are implemented automatically. This rule based expert system uses a tailor-made knowledge development environment and the applications can be run on MS-DOS computers.
