Abstract
The demand for increased corrosion resistance has led to a materials revolution in the construction of automobiles. This dramatic change involves the substitution of coated products in place of bare, cold-rolled sheet steel. This paper provides an overview of the major coated sheet products in use today, including hot-dip galvanized and galvanneal; electroplated zinc, zinc-nickel and zinc-iron; and composite organic/zinc nickel. Key properties are reviewed including corrosion resistance, joinability, paintability, and formability.
