A unique system of corrosion resistant materials has shown excellent performance and durability in flue gas systems for fossil plants, cogeneration plants, waste incinerators and waste-to-energy plants. The system consists of a combination of organic and ceramic based lining materials offering excellent resistance to chemical attack, physical abuse and thermal demands. Case histories are presented, with descriptions of the operating environments, materials selection criteria and operating experiences.

The newer generation organic materials combine excellent chemical resistance and higher temperature resistance. The ceramic based monolithic linings have been reformulated to offer much lower thermal conductivities and thus better insulation. Often it is possible to utilize the insulating ability of the corrosion proof refractory and thereby eliminate external insulation. Some thermal design considerations are also discussed.

The paper also examines several generic coating materials and their advantages and limitations. Failure mechanisms will be presented for each system.
