Abstract
The behavior of the intermetallic materials, IC-50 and IC-218 in dynamic oxidation and hot corrosion tests is compared with that of several commercial superalloys. The tests were conducted in burner rigs, the dynamic oxidation test at 1800°F (982°C) and 2000°F (1093°C), and the hot corrosion test at 1650°F (899°C) with an injection of 50 ppm sea salt solution. The extent of corrosion was measured using metallography and the corrosion products were identified using SEM/EDAX and x-ray diffraction. The corrosion mechanisms of the intermetallics and superalloys are discussed.
