Magnetic flux leakage principles for ILI is still the method of choice for inspection for both inspection companies and end users. Evaluation of this phenomenon will include an examination of the types of anomalies MFL will detect, its limitations and the data currently available from inspection surveys.

Detection will examine flux leakages caused by different metal loss types such as mill grinds, outside interference/gouging, mill defects and corrosion. Non metal loss signal generators will also be compared to metal loss signal generators. Non metal loss signals include pipeline appurtenances, mechanical signals such as dents and wrinkles and hydrogen blistering. Configuration, volume and proximity to interference factors will be studied.

Grading criteria will be given using standard examples of each. Correlation of data to pipeline and its importance to correct data interpretation will be examined. Cooperation of the client and continuous data feedback by client is necessary to improve results.
