Abstract
The basic corrosion process is reviewed and the factors influencing the thermodynamic driving force are discused. The roles played by both the coating and the cathodic protection system are discused and the relationship between the two systems relating to corrosion under a coating film is shown. The importance of treating the coating as part of the cathodic protection system is explained. The need to be aware of the engineering variables of the pipe coating, not only as applied, but as a function of time is presented.
