The high alloy austenitic stainless steel, Avesta 254 SMO®* (UNS S31254), has been used in a wide range of chemical processing industry environments. S31254 has replaced 300-series stainless steels that failed from pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking. Equipment fabricated of S31254 includes crystallizers, mixing vessels, pressure vessels, tanks, columns, evaporators, heat exchangers, piping, spin nozzles, and pumps. Eleven applications are discussed in detail.
