The authors have developed techniques for maximizing the corrosion information available from short-term coupon exposures. These techniques include the calculation of an estimated long-term corrosion rate and an estimation of the time required for the treated cooling water to passivate coupons.

Coupon weight loss data are plotted versus time for coupons removed at 24-hour intervals during studies of 140 to 180 hours. These data are fit to an equation of the form:
where Y is weight loss (mg) and t is time (hours). The first derivative of this function is taken to determine the instantaneous rate of metal weight loss; both of these curves are plotted. The instantaneous weight loss data are compared with similar data measured by a continuous, recording electrochemical corrosion rate monitor. Data from experimental runs using generic inhibitor programs are presented.
