Flue Gas Desulfurization systems are prone to corrosion problems and there is a need for operations and maintenance personnel with limited corrosion expertise to diagnose the type of corrosion and identify a treatment. The task is well suited to a knowledge-based implementation. This paper gives a brief background of the problem and describes Corex, an expert system for characterizing corrosion failure modes and selecting an appropriate treatment.
