A comprehensive study, utilizing pipe ring ovalization testing, full scale pressure tests and fracture mechanics evaluation has been performed in order to quantify the influence of residual stress on the sulphide stress cracking behaviour of double submerged arc welded large diameter gas pipeline material.

A procedure to control the weld zone residual stresses is described as are the results from testing pipe material in both the as-welded and post weld thermal treated condition at various levels of residual stresses. Preliminary indications obtained from fracture mechanics evaluation showed that the benefits of the inductive thermal treatment may also include alteration of the as welded metallographic microstructure.
