Since the introduction of shaft grounding of propellers and shafts of some Canadian Forces ships, increases in fouling of the propellers and in cathodic protection current requirements have been problems. To prevent fouling and reduce current requirements, two trials of propellers coated with the Canadian Naval standard underwater coating system were carried out between 1981 and 1986. After 2.5 years, a coated propeller on a Canadian Forces ship was in good condition with no fouling, and the only problem was paint loss in areas where cavitation occurred. Also, with a coated propeller, the current requirements of the underwater hull were reduced between 20% and 30%.
