Pitting corrosion in Cu:Ni heat exchanger tubing in treated and untreated water service has become a wide spread problem. A corrosion evaluation of pitting corrosion in a once through heat exchanger using river water used potentiodynamic corrosion testing techniques to determine that the problem was primarily related to water velocity. Use of fully reversed polarization scans showed increasing crevice corrosion tendencies with increasing water velocities. Tests with ferrous sulfate demonstrated that additions of 1.0 ppm or less Fe+2 could reduce the crevice corrosion tendencies.
