As is customary, chemical cleaning of a utility boiler is performed following a major overhaul. Recently, a major electric utility company needed to clean a boiler during an outage in order not to extend the length of this particular outage. The utility decided to chemically clean the boiler even though the induced draft fans and combustion systems would be inoperative. To meet the above requirements, a cleaning process was needed that would both use a solvent that would not present a hazard to workers performing various maintenance tasks and, of course, at the same time clean the boiler. This paper will address the cleaning process.
