Calcium may react stoichiometrically with phosphonate compounds within certain ranges of concentration, pH, and temperature, despite the fact they are normally used as "threshold inhibitors". While this precipitation can be used to one's advantage in certain applications, it poses a problem in others. The work discussed in this report reviews laboratory and field investigations into calcium phosphonate precipitation, variables affecting precipitation, and the screening of various phosphonate inhibitors for calcium tolerance under extreme conditions.
