Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is a very common problem with stainless steels in numerous industrial applications. Especially susceptible are the standard austenitic stainless steels AISI 304 and 316. These steels have displayed SCC at as low temperatures as 50 or 60°C in chloride containing solutions (1).
