In a previous study1 . Standard Oil Production Company determined that duplex stainless steel conforming to UNS S31803 would be acceptable for piping and pipeline applications on the North Slope of Alaska. That study showed that UNS 31803 stainless steel pipe and as-welded girth welds have sufficient corrosion resistance to the produced fluid environments commonly encountered in Standard Oil's North Slope operating areas. It also showed that this material and its welds have sufficient low temperature toughness for North Slope applications. An internal study had also shown that duplex stainless steel was the most cost effective pipeline and piping material for one major project when the whole life of the field was considered.
