Abstract
Cracking was observed in a deaerator storage vessel following 11 years of service. A section of welded carbon steel plate was removed. Metallurgical analysis revealed a localized corrosion mechanism with extensive oxide formation. The oxide is non-protective. Defect formation appears related to oxide micro-cracking and subsequent corrosion.
