A computer-enhanced equipment inspection program was developed and implemented by Monsanto's W. G. Krummrich plant. The program supports a commitment by management to a highly effective safety/emission control effort. The on-line computer system developed was installed in the plant's computer facility with access available plantwide via the terminal network. To achieve input and output regulation, individuals were assigned log-on identification codes that allow a level of authority based on job function. The program consists of an equipment data file, an inspection history file, and an inspection schedule. Unique features include system calculated minimum allowable thicknesses, diagnostic file search, and a communications system. The program is essentially paperless, although certain output reports are issued as a management tool. Within one year of placing the system on line, the plant reached a no delinquency inspection status. In addition, a record retention system was established that would provide the backup essential to maintain the inspection program.
