Abstract
The NACE work group on "Deaerator Operation and Water Chemistry" (Work Group T-7H-7b) developed a questionnaire on basic deaerator design, operating history, and water chemistry. A survey was conducted to determine the suitability of this questionnaire and if useful information could be obtained from a limited survey. The data obtained on 84 deaerators inspected by the wet fluorescent magnetic particle method indicates that water hammer is a very likely cause of deaerator cracking. Other factors may be significant, but they were not revealed by this survey.
