Guidelines for acceptable limits of H2S concentration in gas service are for the most part established and based on low pressure laboratory data. The sulfide stress cracking susceptibilities of a number of high strength, low alloy steels and two 13 Cr alloys were determined in high-pressure brine environments containing H2S at concentrations from 10 to 100 ppm. Two forms of environmental damage were observed: sulfide stress corrosion cracks and fissures. Fissures were observed under borderline conditions for sulfide stress corrosion cracking. In general, the data support the MR-01-75 guidelines for acceptable limits of H2S in gas service.
