Expert system programming techniques, as they apply to corrosion problems, are explained and an example of a corrosion domain is discussed. A functional definition of an expert system is given and the advantages of expert system design over conventional program design are outlined. With commercially available expert system development tools, corrosion specialists can write their own knowledge bases without having to be computer specialists. Capturing human knowledge in the form of an expert system provides benefits beyond those obtained from automating a given task. The reasoning used to arrive at a conclusion can be inspected and incomplete or uncertain knowledge is clearly marked. The implications of the accessibility of the knowledge are discussed.
