Abstract
There are many ways of minimizing costly coating failures. The more important preventive actions include specifying and using the right coating for the intended exposure, preparation of effective specifications and "how to" procedures, employment of reputable and professional application contractors, and coatings inspection. Of all the above, inspection is the one attribute most overlooked. It is the intent of this paper to show how inspection can be an extremely cost effective means of extending coating life and therefore, in essence, constitute prepaid insurance against premature failure.
