Abstract
Construction of Petroleum refinery process units in cold climates present additional problems and costs not normally experienced in moderate climatic areas.
Extreme cold effects people, materials, transportation costs and productivity.
Shelter and heat become of prime importance if productivity is to be maintained at a reasonable level. Awareness of materials behaviour at low temperatures is vital for safety and economic reasons. Workers safety takes on some added areas of concern. Short daylight hours require efficient lighting facilities in the work areas. Hydrostatic testing of pressure equipment requires additional steps and equipment.
Corrosion monitoring instruments installed in process equipment do not differ from those installed in process units in temperate climates. Corrosion to metal structures and equipment located below grade tend to slow down as the soil freezes.
Discussion and illustrations will elaborate on these aspects of cold weather construction activities.
