Abstract
Corrosion damages in materials in arctic and subarctic conditions are no different from corrosion damages in the rest of the world. It is mistakenly believed that corrosion problems are absent in these (arctic and subarctic) regions due to colder temperature conditions. Corrosion can be a very severe and critical problem due to temperature fluctuations, the remote locations, deliveries and instrumentation difficulties, especially during the winter months.
Contrary to general belief, the actual drilling of wells is not out of the ordinary in these cold regions. Special climatic and environmental conditions dictate a closer look into the use of corrosion control techniques. This paper describes major sources of corrosion with matching solutions for corrosion control during drilling in the arctic regions.
