The use of chromate as a corrosion inhibitor in near neutral aqueous cooling systems has been greatly restricted due to toxicity. This has led to an increased reliance on alternate inhibitor systems. A brief discussion of corrosion and inhibition mechanisms of low carbon steel in neutral, aqueous environments is given. Corrosion inhibitors of practical importance are described, and a review of some of the newer techniques for studying inhibitor mechanisms is presented.
