Abstract
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development was one of the first state transportation departments to evaluate and use high performance coatings. Since 1963, the department has been working with paint manufacturers to develop an optimum high performance bridge painting system. A great deal of time and money has been expended in this effort and about 90% of the bridges maintained by DOTD are presently being recoated with a high performance system. Many major problems have occurred during the use of high performance coatings within the state, and the department is continuing to develop new systems and procedures for handling these coatings that will alleviate the problems of the past.
