The initiation and propagation of accelerated internal corrosion in boiler evaporators results from the coincidence of unfavourable thermohydraulic conditions, boiler water contamination and tube material quality. This work will establish the role played by fluoride contamination of boiler water. Boiler tube material (Medium Carbon Steel, Type-SA210) was exposed in static autoclaves to aqueous solutions of HF, FeF3 and NiF2 at 300°C. The rate of attack and morphology of the resulting scales were established. For comparison, parallel tests were carried out in aqueous solutions containing chloride ions.
