Abstract
Results of reverse denting experiments to evaluate mechanisms of denting are presented and discussed. These mechanisms involve dissolution of oxides and the pH of chloride solutions of these dissolved oxides, oxidation/reduction potentials of the metallic elements involved, concentration of chloride and available oxygen. These factors affect the rate of carbon steel corrosion by determining the number of cathodic reactions and rate determining steps involved, the rate determining steps of Fe dissolution and the presence of an anodic reaction preferred to Fe oxidation.
