Abstract
Five case histories representing the range of weld failures are described. The case histories detail crevice corrosion of steel, two cases of intergranular cracking of stainless steel, and intergranular attack in the heat-affected zone of zirconium and Hastelloy C-276* welds. Today, weld failures during service are relatively uncommon in the chemical process industries, probably because of improved weld quality control and recognition of the materials limitations of welds in severe service.
