A number of ferritic stainless steel tubing alloys are available for use in heat exchanger service. Included are Type 439 (XM-8, S-43035) which contains 18% chromium and is stabilized with titanium. The E-BRITE® (XM-27, S-44627) alloy contains 26% chromium and 1% molybdenum and is stabilized with columbium. AL 29-4-2 contains 29% chromium, 4% molybdenum and 2% nickel. The Type 439 alloy is produced by conventional AOD melting techniques. The E-BRITE and 29-4-2 alloys are vacuum melted to provide the ultra-low carbon and nitrogen content necessary for the good toughness properties which these alloys possess. Chemical composition of these alloys is given in Table 1. Applicable ASTM specifications are listed in Table 2.
