Materials performance at the 250 ton/day coal liquefaction pilot plant (ECLP) is assessed after nearly 4000 hours of on-coal operation with Illinois No. 6 coal. Assessment is based on inspection findings during two turnarounds and on data amassed from a comprehensive materials evaluation program, combining extensive in-situ testing and monitoring and component failure analyses. Experience has been generally favorable, except for a few instances of severe localized erosion at direct impingement zones in some slurry handling equipment. The only significant corrosion problem occurred in the atmospheric fractionator, and appears similar in nature to chloride attack experienced at other coal liquefaction pilot plants. Neither sour water corrosion nor stress corrosion cracking proved to be a significant factor. Sufficient materials performance data have been accumulated during ECLP's year-long operation to provide a sound basis for designing a large size EDS facility for once-through processing of Illinois coal.
