Rapid rail transit systems are enjoying a resurgence in the United States and the City of Atlanta is following that trend. In November of 1971, area residents voted to set Atlanta in motion by approving an additional one percent sales tax to help finance the proposed 53 miles of rapid rails. Although Atlanta is the third largest convention city in the United States, it is so far the smallest city in North America to have built a rapid transit system.
