The use of wind as an industrial power source for the pipeline industry, has been under investigation by various agencies in North America for many years. The majority of programs have concentrated on the potential application of horizontal axis wind turbine systems. As was discussed in various 1979 NACE papers on the use of vertical axis wind power systems versus horizontal axis wind power systems or solar panels, the vertical axis systems possess attributes which make them more attractive for an industrial application than a similar horizontal axis system. As a result Canada, through the National Research Council of Canada, and Bristol Aerospace Limited had entered into a program to evaluate the industrial potential of vertical axis wind power systems.
