The Bureau of Mines has, for several years, been involved in studies of the geothermal resources of the Imperial Valley, California. The Bureau's primary interest has been the recovery of valuable mineral and metal products from geothermal brines such as those found at the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resources Area (KGRA) (1, 2). The high salinity of these brines and the presence of dissolved gases such as H2S, NH3, CO2, and CH4 combined with wellhead temperatures up to 250° C results in extremely corrosive conditions. Precipitation of solids from the brines to form complex scales further complicates corrosion processes.
