Automobile bodies are severely affected by de-icing salt, chemicals, and extreme climatic conditions. Especially noxious to the vehicle is the invisible corrosion, occurring in the hollow sections of the load-carrying body parts, seriously reducing the overall service life of the car. Corrosion in this area may cause a member to fail and weaken the vehicle structure. Electro-dip coating procedures, though improving the "internal protection", do not necessarily guarantee sufficient corrosion protection as compared with the standards set by the Porsche philosophy. For that reason, Porsche has examined a variety of possibilities to further improve the corrosion resistance of their vehicles. The material Porsche have chosen is hot-dip galvanized sheet steel, produced by the Thyssen Aktiengesellschaft.
