In recent years, corrosion of concentric neutrals on underground electric power cables has become an important industry wide problem. Many papers have been published by investigators studying the problem. This paper deals with the study of two such underground cables in the West Central Wisconsin area which have been subjected to relatively aggressive neutral corrosion. The results of the survey work indicate that, in many cases, corrosion of the neutral has progressed to the point where application of cathodic protection to the existing neutral wires may not extend over any appreciable distance. The importance of leakage conductance to earth and the high linear resistance of the neutral caused by corrosive attack make evaluation of neutral physical conditions and application of cathodic protection a major problem.
