Tool joints are rotary shouldered connections attached to the drill pipe used for drilling oil wells. A tool joint connection consists of a "pin" and a "box" made up to a torque value sufficient to maintain positive contact between the pin and box shoulders during all drilling operations. The required torque causes compressive stresses in the shoulder faces and creates high tensile stresses at the last engaged thread of the tool joint pin.
