The Paradise Steam Plant is located on the west bank of the Green River in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. This mine-mouth power station is located in the midst of western Kentucky’s coal basin where the plant’s present fuel supply is obtained. In February 1979 the TVA Board of Directors authorized the addition of a limestone flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system for Units 1 and 2 of this three-unit power plant. The FGD system will employ a unique and innovative heat recovery method to reheat the scrubbed flue gas. The operation of heat recovery equipment below the acid dewpoint represents the innovative concept being applied at Paradise. CAPCC (Chemico Air Pollution Control Company) is the Contractor for the FGD system. A closed loop, circulating water, heat recovery and reheat system utilizes three different materials of construction for the heat exchanger tubes. Water passing through Inconel 6251  (ASTM B442) tubes in a flue gas economizer for heat recovery will lower the inlet flue gas temperature to the FGD system from 305°F to 252°F; the heated water will then pass through 317L stainless and corten tubes in the FGD reheater, reheating the scrubbed flue gas from 122°F to 170°F.
