Materials resistant to liquid lithium corrosion are of interest for numerous reasons; among these are: liquid lithium containment alloys for controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors, materials for advanced battery concepts employing liquid lithium, and containment alloys for advanced heat engine concepts. These applications all require good creep resistance as well as good liquid lithium corrosion resistance. The selection of the alloys tested here was based on these criteria. Though a number of investigators have performed corrosion studies on the corrosion of metals and alloys in liquid lithium, there is very little quantitative and widely available data on high temperature alloys.
