Various alloys used for steam generator tubing in PWR nuclear power plants continue to change in order to optimize corrosion resistance with regard to particular environmental conditions. Austenitic stainless steels were originally used in the industry but susceptibility to chloride stress corrosion cracking(1-3) led to the current use of nickel base alloys for tubing. Today, Inconel* Alloy 600 is used in steam generators produced by U.S. PWR vendors while either Alloy 600 or Incoloy* Alloy 800 are used by European vendors.
