Most papers on materials for gasifiers have been concerned with metals for obvious reasons. Firstly, service conditions in gasifiers are quite often marginal for the grades of steel commonly used in chemical process industries and thus need close attention. Secondly, the main structural components of the process equipment - pressure vessels and piping - are made of steel, and are subject to strict specifications and design codes, such as the ASME pressure vessel and boiler codes. Last, but not least, the installed cost of the refractory lining is only a small fraction of that of the total cost of the gasifier and its associated piping. A study by CB&I (1) has shown that the total cost of building two 24 foot diameter gasifiers will cost about $247M. Of this amount only approximately $5 million is needed for refractories or about 2 percent.
