When iron oxide is chemically removed from process equipment, ferric (Fe+3) ions are released into the solution. Since the Fe+3 species is a strong oxidizing agent, some "Fe+3 ion corrosion" is the inevitable result of all chemical dissolution of iron oxides (Fe3O4 or the various red oxides) from ferrous metal surfaces:
