The Idaho Chemical Processing Plant (ICPP) is operated by Allied Chemical Corporation for the U.S. Department of Energy to recover uranium from spent nuclear fuel elements. The liquid radioactive wastes from the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels is stored in holding tanks and then calcined to a granular solid form in the Waste Calcine Facility (WCF). Dissolution of nuclear fuel elements and processing of the resulting wastes radioactively contaminates process equipment. Most process equipment at ICPP is maintained directly by hands on repair. In order for personnel to work on this equipment it must be effectively decontaminated to acceptable radiation levels as established by the Department of Energy.
