The Square Butte HVDC system is a mine mouth power project. Electric power is generated at the lignite coal fields near Center, North Dakota and is then tramsmitted over a 456 mile long d-c transmission line to Duluth, Minnesota. The HVDC system is rated at ±250 kilovolts d-c, 1,000 amperes, with a 500 megawatt rated capacity. Figure 1 shows the route of the transmission line, the location of the electrodes at the Duluth end, and the location of the Northern Natural Gas Company pipelines.
