The development of regulations applicable to handling hazardous gases following passage of the Natural Gas Pipeline Safety Act of 1968 resulted in an increased emphasis on the use of cathodic protection for gas transmission and distribution systems. This increased emphasis is a necessary part of compliance with "Regulations for the Transportation of Natural and Other Gas by Pipeline." These regulations are administered by the Federal Department of Transportation's Office of Pipeline Safety Operations (OPSO).
