The purpose of this paper is to review some of the applications of nitrogen gas in purging, cooldown, inerting, chemical cleaning and startup of process equipment as it relates to safety and corrosion control. Nitrogen is accepted as the finest product for inerting. Nitrogen is also recognized for its ability to prevent oxidation and corrosion in vessels and pipes. Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless diatomic gas that makes up over 3/4 of our atmosphere. It was discovered in 1772 by Earl Schule and Daniel Rutherford. The physical properties are listed in Reference #1.
