Bridge deck deterioration has become a major highway maintenance problem due to the increased usage of deicing salts. As has been recognized penetration of the chloride ion through the concrete to the reinforcing steel and the ensuing corrosion is one of the major contributing factors to this deterioration. Cathodic protection is one method that has been used to control the corrosion reaction and thus reduce the damage.
