Texts dealing with the treatment of cooling water relate a long established method of estimating the calcium carbonate [CaCO3] scaling tendency of waters, based on the work of Langelier (1) in 1936. It is generally recognized that, although the method attempts to relate bulk solution CaCO3 solubility to a phenomenon which occurs at a (hot) metal surface where solution characteristics are somewhat different, the method is the best available at the present time.
